What is 'sustainable' fashion?

Fashion has always been a reflection of society and its values. In recent years, the focus has shifted to sustainability and the impact of fashion on the environment. Sustainable fashion is a new movement that emphasizes the need to reduce the environmental footprint of the fashion industry while also promoting ethical and fair labor practices. But what does 'sustainable' really mean?

Sustainable fashion generally is used when talking about creating clothing and accessories that are made from materials that have a low environmental impact and are produced in a way that respects the rights and well-being of workers.

However, the meaning of the word 'sustainable' is actually different, it means it will last over time - which should be an important part of buying sustainable clothing. It means buying timeless items of good quality, made out of natural, organic, and recycled materials, whilst reducing waste and water usage during production. Ideally, these items are also biodegradable, meaning naturally break down in nature and thus do not pollute the planet. Even better is when circularity is included it the business process, by recycling waste and turning it into a new product.

One of the key components of sustainable fashion is the use of environmentally friendly fabrics. Some of the best fabrics for sustainable fashion include:

  1. Organic/recycled Cotton: Organic cotton is grown without the use of harmful pesticides and chemicals, which makes it a healthier option for both the environment and workers. It uses 98% less water. It is also a renewable resource that can be grown again and again, and it's biodegradable. Recycled cotton is also a great option, but remember cotton cannot be recycled repeatedly, after 1-2 recycle streams the cotton fibres break down.

  2. Linen: Linen is made from flax, which is a plant that requires less water and pesticides than traditional cotton. Linen is also biodegradable, making it a great choice for sustainable fashion.

  3. Tencel: Tencel is a type of rayon made from wood fibers that are sustainably harvested. It is soft, durable, and biodegradable, making it a great choice for sustainable clothing. Specifically, Modal fibers are a soft Tencel fabric that is making its way into the fashion industry.

  4. Hemp: Hemp is a fast-growing plant that requires little water and pesticides. It is also a highly durable and versatile fabric that can be used for a variety of clothing items.

  5. Recycled Polyester: Recycled polyester is made from recycled plastic bottles, reducing the amount of waste in landfills and decreasing the demand for new petroleum-based materials.

In addition, the country of production is relevant. Is it produced locally or far away? Transportation is a huge part of co2 emissions, especially by plane or boat.

Sustainable fashion is an important step in the right direction for the fashion industry. By choosing to support sustainable brands and incorporating environmentally friendly materials into our wardrobe, we can make a positive impact on the environment and help create a better future for all.

In conclusion, sustainable fashion is the future of the fashion industry. By using environmentally friendly fabrics, reducing waste and promoting fair labor practices, we can create a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry that benefits everyone.

Every choice matters - what you buy is what you support.
